Euro is the local currency in Slovakia. Changing currencies is offered by banks and ATMs but the best way to change currencies is to find no comission currency exchange shops.

Credit cards are accepted at many more places. If in doubt, ask the shop assistant or look for symobols and tags on shop windows. The most popluar credit cards are Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

You can also open a bank account as the non-residental account service is designed especially for foreign nationals. All you need is passport.

SHOPPING

Stores are generally open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Smaller shops may also close for a lunch break. Stores in shopping malls are open until later ( to 6 p.m.). Supermarkets are cheaper than inner-city stores and regularly offer special deals to attract consumers. Stores of the following chains can be found in most cities in Slovakia: Tesco, Kaufland, Lidl, Billa, Family Center. If you have plenty of time to spend on shopping, fresh meat, vegetables and fruits, or home made honey can be bought at the local market.
